Guyana’s Mid-Year Report: Growth on Paper, Pressure on the People?

Sharing is caring!

This edition of FYI | For Your Information, hosted by Sherod Duncan, takes a closer look at the state of Guyana’s economy through the government’s 2026 Mid-YearReport. While the report points to economic growth of approximately 33%, driven largely by the expanding oil sector, Duncan examines what he sees as weaknesses beneath the headline numbers, including deficits within public enterprises and declines in sectors such as diamonds, manganese, sugar and agriculture. The programme questions whether Guyana’s rapid economic expansion is sufficiently diversified and, more importantly, whether the benefits of that growth are being felt in the everyday lives of ordinary citizens.

Migration and transparency also feature prominently, following the appearance of large numbers of foreign nationals at the Ministry of Health. Duncan revisits questions surrounding Guyana’s migration policies and the recently announced arrangement with the United States involving third-country nationals, calling for greater clarity about how the agreement operates, who is being admitted, their status in Guyana and the responsibilities assumed by the government. He argues that migration must be managed through clear policies, reliable information and proper public and parliamentary oversight rather than speculation created by an absence of official information.

The programme also examines infrastructure and public administration, including concerns about the relocation of the housing authority’s headquarters to the Heroes Highway and whether citizens were adequately informed about the change. Duncan questions how major administrative decisions affect ordinary people who depend on government agencies and argues that accessibility and communication must remain central to the delivery of public services.

The broadcast concludes with developments surrounding the criminal proceedings arising from the MV Barima tragedy. Attorneys representing the accused have raised questions about the handling of the investigation and whether responsibility is being concentrated on individual workers before broader institutional and ministerial accountability is fully examined. Bringing together the economy, migration, public administration and the continuing fallout from the MV Barima disaster, FYI asks whether Guyana’s unprecedented national wealth is being matched by transparency, competent governance and accountability.
