Nicole Theriot Discusses US Sanctions, Visa Reviews & Guyana Elections

Sharing is caring!

US Ambassador Nicole Theriot answers questions on GECOM, US sanctions, visa reviews and migrant resettlement in Guyana, speaking with reporters on the sidelines of the 27th Americas Regional Conference on September 23, 2026.

Theriot says opposition concerns about GECOM merit attention and warns that the commission’s standstill could prevent regional and local elections. She also says existing US Treasury sanctions remain in place and explains how visa reviews are handled in Washington.

On migrant arrivals, the ambassador says Guyana approves each person before transfer and has rejected applicants. She outlines a two-year, US$7.8 million contract with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) covering housing, food, medical care, communication and job skills training. Theriot also promises to seek an update on the review affecting Guyana’s catfish exports.
