BEYOND THE GRADES: NITYA NARINE AND WHY SHE CHOSE TO WRITE 27 SUBJECTS

Sharing is caring!

Twenty-six Grade Ones and a Grade Two is an extraordinary result that has made Nitya Narine Guyana’s top CSEC performers. But behind those grades is something perhaps more interesting: a teenager who loves to paint, enjoys having fun, spends plenty of time on her phone – and, like many teenagers, sometimes gets yelled at for it. Nitya is also a young woman who has been affected by the painful reality of suicide in her school community in Berbice and has expressed that pain and showed support for others. In this interview with News Room’s Neil Marks, Nitya talks about what it took to achieve academic excellence without losing sight of the things that make her a teenager – the importance of rest, laughter, creativity and having a life outside of studying. This is a conversation about the person behind the grades – and why being a well-rounded young person may be one of Nitya’s greatest achievements…

  1. Congratulations, Nitya!

You’re a brilliant young woman, and it’s wonderful to see you considering law as your academic and professional path. Just one piece of advice – stay away from criminal law!

😄 Wishing you great success and all the very best on your journey. Good luck! 🌟

  2. This is a brilliant young woman who excelled at an examination unfortunately she wasn’t guided properly. She has a passion for the arts and social sciences. Her choice to pursue law suits her mindset. And an huge thank you to recognize and share your thoughts on the scourge that hampers Guyana’s youths which is suicide. Why why why this beautiful young woman can recognize this travesty in Guyana but the damn so called leaders turns a blind eye to it?? Guyana youths are literally dying and its leaders are fighting for money 💰 without young people this country is doomed.

  3. Congratulations Nitya! Guyana needs 1000s more like you. Let's hope that your incredible success inspires other upcoming students. However, I'm a tad disappointed that you have chosen to pursue law as your profession of choice. I know that your intentions are noble because you want to help others. However, with your accomplishment in the sciences I think you can make a brilliant scientist whose discoveries will not only help Guyanese, but all the citizens of the world. Good luck in your future endeavors from a fellow Berbician who left to study science 56 years ago.
