Guyana: The Economic Miracle of South America

Sharing is caring!

The Guyana Economic Miracle

Guyana’s economic miracle refers to the country’s extraordinary transformation into one of the world’s fastest-growing economies, largely driven by its booming oil sector, discovered in 2015. Prior to this, Guyana was among the poorest nations in the Western Hemisphere, relying heavily on traditional sectors such as agriculture, mining, sugar, rice, bauxite, and gold. However, with the discovery and development of massive offshore oil reserves in the Stabroek Block, operated primarily by ExxonMobil, Guyana has fundamentally altered its economic trajectory. Since the start of oil production, Guyana’s real GDP growth has soared to unprecedented levels. The International Monetary Fund reported a staggering 57.8% real GDP growth in 2022, with continued double-digit growth expected through 2024. In 2024 alone, the economy expanded by around 43%, positioning Guyana as a global economic standout. Oil production reached approximately 645,000 barrels per day in 2024, and recoverable resources are estimated to exceed 11 billion barrels of oil equivalent. This oil boom has catapulted Guyana’s GDP per capita from among the lowest in South America to nearly $19,000, surpassing many regional neighbors. Despite oil being the primary driver, Guyana’s non-oil sectors have also experienced healthy growth. The non-oil economy expanded by around 12.6% in the first half of 2024, with the construction industry surging due to a substantial infrastructure investment plan worth nearly $1 billion. The government, under President Mohamed Irfaan Ali, has pursued prudent fiscal management, channeling oil revenues into a nationally governed Natural Resource Fund aimed at long-term investments in infrastructure, education, climate security, and technology. Additionally, Guyana is making efforts to diversify its economy by developing sectors such as agriculture, logistics, clean energy, and business process outsourcing, which includes building large campuses for call centers expected to generate thousands of jobs.

  1. من تحت الصفر الى الانتعاش
ولكن هل ليبيا والعراق ونيجريا والجزائر استفادت من نفطها حتى تسفيد هذة لا اعلم العلم عند الله

  2. Guyana is a wealthy country, rich in natural resources. However, how is it that Guyana is "RICH" also in POVERTY and INFLATION now? If they don't have the wealth I can understand. Since, they do have the wealth, then, what is happening in that small nation? Trump says he has a list of 12 major corrupters who are responsible for the condition of Guyana. They're decorating Georgetown, and elsewhere in jungle areas but the rest of the country are like slums and dirty. Greed has blossom out to its fullest in Guyana. The rich get richer and poor get poorer.

  3. All flowery talk and 58 percent are dirt poor and politicians are pocketing the wealth for their friends and family and still their is no opposition it has become a dictatorship government, dirty water, dirty markets, dirty canals and dirty politicians and cops, corruption is rampant.
