Global Journalist: Guyana threatened by ‘oil curse’

Sharing is caring!

One of the poorest nations in the Western hemisphere is about to be transformed. That’s because tiny Guyana is the site of one of the largest offshore oil discoveries in decades.

But as the South American nation readies for a gusher of oil cash, there are concerns the relatively peaceful and democratic nation could be changed for the worse.

Joining the program:
*Samuel Sukhnandan, senior journalist for the Guyana Times and Television Guyana.

*Raul Gallegos, associate director for consulting firm Control Risks.

*Anthony Bryan, professor at the Institute of International Relations at the University of the West Indies.

*Nick Butler, former BP plc oil executive and visiting professor at King’s College London.

  6. Why does the Guyana journalist use the word am after every short sentence? This is for the BP executive, it was my suggestion to Obama on how to cap and clean up BP spill in the Gulf in 2010, I was never paid to take both Obama and BP to court, waste of time they stole my intellectual property.

  7. 🇬🇾 I'm 🇬🇾 a 🇬🇾 Guyanese 🇬🇾 living in Guyana I am not feeling the impact of the oil in Guyana many days I cannot put food on my table things are really Hard in Guyana

  8. Unfortunately I am unable to overlook the fact that this whole interview,or reasoning call it what you may, it's absolutely foundation on functional illiteracy,no contributor have demonstrated even any gram of common sense, simply put just blowing poison gas/breath.

  9. COnstitution of Guyana 1980Act no 02 of the co-operative Republic of Guyana 1980

COnstitution of America of the United States of America

    North Carolina State constitution

    Commonwealth of the United Nations.

  10. Global journalist at least you got one thing wrong about Venezuela so far you did not speak the truth why Venezuela economy collapse United States is the culprit for that carry on

Where did this gentleman got that figure from about 50/50% ?

  11. Gallegos is very disrespectful. He categorizes Guyana's Oil wealth as a "Homeless Person winning the lottery". What about the people who become suddenly rich with drug money in Columbia where he is? These people are ridiculous. Even the Guyanese Panelist is making assinine statements that encourage this type of disrespect. He does not even correct the moderator that the correct term is Guyanese not Guyanan. Just shows you how much they know.

  12. Wow it's amazing how everybody here only knows how to criticize but put one of you guys on the reporters bench and I'll bet not one of you criticizing these reporters could even answer one question losers losers

  13. Anthony Bryant you are not here in Guyana how could you say that Guyanese don't have faith in the former opposition party PPP to run the oil & gas sector? Guyanese don't trust the grainja regime and you know it but won't admit that. I want to remind you that the PPP was the governing party for 23 years and grainja had audits done in the government offices held under the PPP and no money was missing, misappropriated or irregularities were found as against what is happening now under the illegal grainja regime rampant corruption, lies, deceit and above all the total disregard of the Guyana Constitution and court rulings so get your facts right before you speak rubbish
    Guyana South America

  14. Bottom line is this illegal grainja govt and the Trotman person who signed the contract sold out the Guyanese people who will not benefit from the oil under this grainja regime they have their own interest at heart and not the welfare of the Guyanese people
    Guyana South America

  15. The Arab Gulf countries are all doing and they were poorer, so why do you think that Guyana will face trouble? As far as I can tell, the government has been planning to circumvent any issues, and is doing a good job at it. They have already done their research on possible mishaps from other countries, and have employed experts.

  16. from some of the comments here u can clearly see how the people in Guyana are illiterate, they're just not prepared to listen to anything good concerning the benefits of guyana ,no wonder the country is a shithole.

  17. how wicked and bad minded of yall, only showing the bad parts of guyana. show the good parts, show the parts with the malls and theatres and hotels and big houses. i want know is who tell america we poor

  18. Guyana both country and people are no different from any other humans on the planet, Guyanese crawl, Guyanese walk and Guyanese run…..I am in full support of this country becoming the 51 state of America and that is going to be a game changer needed for my guyanesse people…..
