Guyana: 50 million pound road to nowhere – that you’ve paid for
A £52m road through the Amazon jungle is being built using British aid that is intended to help the climate, The Telegraph can reveal.
The road in Guyana goes nowhere other than a tiny village and has long been criticised by environmentalists, though it is celebrated by the oil industry. It is just one among hundreds of schemes funded by taxpayers through the International Climate Finance initiative (ICF).
Few will have heard of the ICF outside Westminster circles. It is the result of the Government’s determination to push a green agenda: devised under the Conservatives and continued by Ed Miliband, it was set up to funnel aid to climate projects in developing countries. It will be used to spend £11.6bn in foreign aid by the end of this financial year.

so Guyana isn't allowed to build roads but the UK build roads all over their country including remote roads in Scotland. They are building underground tunnels from scottish isles to the scottish mainland, where only a few hundred people live, but God forbid Guyana start building their own infrastructure.
this B!tch from UK doesn't know wah seh taaking about! she just fly in and talking about Guyana. Get she Rass out fast.
They don’t need your money white people always getting involved
It’s easy to see that this is a hit piece. Not real journalism at all.
Easiest way to find is that this road isn’t crazy expensive for the geography. It’s a road that goes through rain forest.
It’s linking remote villages a natural resource to international markets.
They aren’t building palaces.
They’re building roads. A basic infrastructure.
It not only bring value to local people.
It brings value to the whole world. this is linking farms, mining sites, natural resources to the world so there is more supply to meet demand. How’s that bad for anyone.
What a load of horse manure this lady is talking thats a critical road way
this road will benefit drugs and human trafficking
Chinese cunning should never be discounted but the end result should be a paved road to Lethem. This road will connect Georgetown to Boa Vista if the road to Lethem is completely paved. Brazil is aching for sea access for products grown in northern brazil. Mabura is just one third of the distance to Lethem from linden.
That road will link south America to de rest of de world its de most transmotive project
Progress well done. The country needs to upgrade its infrastructure and roads……these roads WILL produce jobs and economic development.
At least it doesn't ended in embezzllement
Why is Britain paying for anything in Guyana. Is Guyana still a colony? Why is the King going to Suriname after going to the Netherlands? It all looks very strange.
Jagdeo is a thief he need to b jailed
They dnt want their country to be developed they want to live like caveman.
I knew it. It’s nothing to do with Climate. It’s about the oil. They’ve just discovered wake up
Lovies
Creating infrastructure it’s good.
its being built because foreigners want access to the resources. they dont gaf about ppl
Invest in the people and people would make the land rich
She has a point. It's not like they built the road to alleviate travel to multiple groups of people like miners and people transporting goods to and from the interior regions, that would be understandable.
I do not think the UK would be involved if there wasn't a lot in it for them, for all we know this timber is bound for Britain. BUT, it is ironic how the Guyanese government seems to spare no expence or troubles in assisting foreign based companies and nationals, while taxes remain hig, wages low and unemployment rampant.

This is misleading to the world. This road has existed for decades and is now being refurbished.
International climate funds to build a road across a jungle?!!
That there wasn't single person who said that they would have better homes and infrastructure as a result of this project. That is surprising, at the very least given that the environment surrounding those who agreed to be interviewed revealed a deeper problem or rather some form of complacency. If there are roads but no communities or businesses are built there to support those communities within 10 years it would be a tremendous waste but perhaps as long as the roads last as long as that time and beyond, such development could go on to happen some day. This in turn would make it a good investment from the benefit of hindsight in the very long run for the people of the future who live there. Men's petty aspiration to be rich for themselves while failing to develop their people is one of the chief reasons for stagnation in some nations. Singapore's early posture saved it's people what those of Guyana would find themselves the victim of as much as other nations affected by myopia.
Idiots….let's destroy our forest and jungles like every other country instead of learning from their mistakes.they do exactly the same.

My friends in Georgetown are so grateful to the UK, they traffic in exotic species insects birds reptiles, primates & amphibians and hopefully when the road is complete they should by then be able to procure the animals legitimately.
I’m more offended by her pants than the money.
It is time Guyana got some of the wealth that was extracted during Colonialization by the British.
