He Left Guyana to Build Their Future ❤️🇬🇾 | A Guyanese Love Story 1979 — Part 3
Ravi left the woman he loves in Guyana and travelled to America with one promise — somehow, he would build a future for both of them. ❤️🇬🇾
But New York in 1979 is nothing like he imagined.
Far from home, Ravi begins learning what it really means to start over as a Guyanese immigrant — the cold, the loneliness, hard work, counting every dollar, and depending on the kindness of family while trying to find his feet.
Then he meets Sunny, another Guyanese man whose story changes the way Ravi sees his own future.
Years earlier, Sunny also left his wife and children behind in Guyana to build something better in America. He remembers arriving with almost nothing, sometimes sleeping in building stairways, with nobody there to help him.
Now, after years of sacrifice, Sunny is finally preparing to return to Guyana and reunite with the family he left behind.
For Ravi, Sunny becomes proof that perhaps his dream for Rosalie isn’t impossible after all.
Meanwhile, back home in Berbice, Rosalie continues waiting.
She misses Ravi.
She thinks about him.
She even begins knitting something to keep him warm in the New York winter.
And then one day, a bicycle boy arrives at her gate with a message from Mr. Singh:
Ravi is calling at three o’clock.
In 1979, there were no mobile phones, no WhatsApp and no video calls. For two young people separated between Guyana and America, even hearing each other’s voices required planning, money—and a little help from the community.
Rosalie walks to Singh’s Shop early.
Thousands of miles away, Ravi walks through the New York snow toward a public telephone.
Two people.
Two countries.
Two telephones.
And one conversation they have both been waiting for. ❤️
Their story continues in Part 4.

Imagine waiting all week just to hear the voice of somebody you love. ❤️🇬🇾
No WhatsApp. No video calls. No texting.
Ravi has to find a public telephone in New York. Mr. Singh has to send a boy on a bicycle to tell Rosalie. And Rosalie has to walk to the shop and wait for the phone to ring.
For those of you who lived through those days — do you remember waiting for an overseas call from family in America, Canada or England? ☎️
Tell us what it was like. I would love for the younger generation reading these comments to understand what staying connected really meant back then.
And one more question…
Do you think Ravi and Rosalie are going to make it? ❤️
